Ba Zi or Feng Shui ?

During Traditional Feng Shui or Ba Zi training, we explain that in life there are generally three important types of luck. The Earth Luck (related to Feng Shui), the Heaven Luck (related to Ba Zi, Chinese astrology, which I simplify as “being born under a good star or not”) and the Human Luck (the choices we make, which can be guided using the Yi Jing). All three are closely connected.

But who governs whom ? Feng Shui represents Earth Luck. This means that Feng Shui energy brings the environment’s energy into our living space. If our Feng Shui is good, it brings prosperity, strong relationships, and harmony; if it is bad, it brings the opposite. Feng Shui affects all members of the family living in that space.

Ba Zi represents Heaven Luck. This means that Ba Zi energy brings success, obstacles, or misfortune into your personal life. It affects only you, not other members of your family.

The Yi Jing provides answers to the questions you have. It helps guide you in the choices you make.

Okay, but with all this, who really guides or governs – who?!

If we look at Ba Zi, it concerns only one person. It allows us to see what will happen in your personal and professional life, from birth to death. Ba Zi shows your strengths and weaknesses, how you are likely to react in certain situations, and whether you will face obstacles, receive help, or experience ease—either temporarily or throughout your life. Now, taking Feng Shui into account: Feng Shui provides support or, on the contrary, constraints within a living space. The Feng Shui of a location brings ease or obstacles, wealth or expenses. It can also indicate which family member is favored. It is possible to see whether certain years will be more beneficial or, conversely, bring misfortunes, accidents, job losses, or success. If your Ba Zi indicates that a particular year will have “obstacles,” even the best Feng Shui in the world cannot completely remove them. You may still achieve success, but there will be challenges. Naturally, having good Feng Shui will make things much easier than having poor Feng Shui.

But what if you move ?

Is it Feng Shui or Ba Zi that causes you to leave your home and move to a new place? What determines that we have this new home? Is it our house guiding us toward a better—or worse—home, or is it our Ba Zi telling us that we will move on a specific date? But does Ba Zi determine whether this move will be for better or worse? Some people will tell you that it’s only Feng Shui, and if you use Ba Zi, it means you are not skilled in Feng Shui and cannot master the earth’s energies. Others will say that you need both. The two are closely linked—one cannot exist without the other. You can have good Feng Shui and still feel like you’ve failed in life, feeling depressed… or you can have good Feng Shui and be happy, enjoying life. Conversely, the opposite can also happen: you may have bad Feng Shui, work hard to achieve things, and still be happy. The worst situation would be to have bad Feng Shui and feel like you’ve failed in life, feeling depressed. This shows that both Feng Shui and Ba Zi are indeed present and interconnected.
